December 2011 Addtional Racking Beams for a Dexion user. When this Staffordshire based Warehousing and Logistics firm suffered a fire in 2007 in one of their main warehouses they immediately set …

December 2011

Addtional Racking Beams for a Dexion user.

When this Staffordshire based Warehousing and Logistics firm suffered a fire in 2007 in one of their main warehouses they immediately set about moving the whole operation to a new warehouse. Since their existing Racking system had been lost in the blaze they were forced to look for replacement racking to fill the new building. Luckily Universal was able to supply replacement UniDex (Dexion compatible) pallet racking, valued at over £75,000, instantly from its Stoke-on-Trent depot and the racking was erected imediately by a local Installer. Despite the massive inconvenience caused by the fire, the Company was able to return its operations to normal in record time.

Having been able to support them during that critical time, Universal has once again, in December 2011, been able to supply 1200 extra Beams for their Dexion racking system. We fulfilled this requirement again from stock and were able to deliver in a matter days in time to ease some of the pre-Christmas pressures which are common place in the warehousing/logistics business.

Anti-collapse safety mesh for Aggreko PLC

Universal has just completed the installation of £11000 rack safety mesh (anti-collapse) system at Aggreko’s new mutli-million pound manufacturing facility in Dumbarton, Scotland.
Anti-collapse safety mesh is attached to the rear of single sided Pallet racking, to prevent palletised goods from falling backwards onto personnel operating on the other side of the racking structure.
For this requirement, Universal used the Swedish made Axelent Safestor system who were able to supply a quality product, within 2 weeks and at a competitive price.

Universal also installed its UniSpan Longspan shelving system for Aggreko’s archive storage facility, located also in the new factory.

Multi-phase racking contract for a well known Transport & Logistics PLC

Universal has just completed a £60,000 multi-phase contract for this well known Transport and Logistics group.
This important customer contacted us in the middle of January 2012 to say they were inviting bids to buy 500 bays of unwanted Dexion racking at its Cheshire warehouse. Within 48 hours our bid, being the best, was accepted and on the following Monday we were able to allocate Labour and Handling equipment to commenced the 2 week program of dismantle and removal.
No sooner had we started phase 1, the client called again to ask if we could quote for phase 2, the dismantle of 775 bays of Apex pallet racking at its Northants site, starting within 2 working days. Again our offer was accepted and we had Labour and Equipment on site the following Monday. This second phase was completed in record time last friday 10th February.
Again, part way through phase 2, this customer called us again to invite us to bid against others for a 3rd phase – the alteration of 10,000 Apex racking beam levels at a third site close by. Once again our price was lower than others and was accepted on the Friday subject to an immediate start date on the Monday. Luckily we were able to re-schedule our Scottish based labour team and they were able to commence this 3rd Northants phase the following Monday.
At the time of going to press this final phase is still on track for completion by 16th February 2012.

What is Widespan shelving – is it the same as Longspan shelving?
Widespan (aka Longspan) is a hand loaded steel shelving system where the shelf size (left to right width) is normally between 1200mm and 2700mm. Normal frame height is between 2000 – 3000mm and the shelf medium is usually chipboard or steel panels.

So why is Widespan so popular?
Its because its such a versatile shelving system. Todays widespan systems uses fully adjustable shelf beams (clip-on design with no nuts & bolts) so shelf levels can be change within minutes. It comes in a wide range of shelf sizes and frame heights and because each shelf can carry higher weight loads over a greater span, the system uses less components and therefore costs less per sq.metre of shelf space

Widespan can be used to store anything from small cartons to large boxes or components ….in fact anything a person can lift.
Its ideal for wholesalers, cash & carries, factories, archive file storage, clothes & garment traders….etc etc

If you have a particular storage requirement or you have a comment or suggestion you’d like to share with our readers, please reply to this blog.

Why a well known Supermarket chain chose Universal….

Universal has, since 1997, been a leading supplier of component spare parts for repairs and add-ons to DEXION and LINK pallet racking systems. As one of the top four, this particular Supermarket chain now relies on Universal to supply and install replacement components to many of their Regional Distribution centres, where fork truck damage is an on-going problem.

Because Universal can supply these products cheaper (typcally by 25-30%) and often quicker than previous suppliers, this retailer not only saves on the cost of materials but, crucially avoids the unseen cost and inconvenience of lost warehouse storage capacity – particularly at peak times such as the pre-Christmas period.

This Retailer is delighted with our prices, products and delivery service and continues to be one of our top customers.

I’d like to clear up a few myths regarding the use of compatible components for Dexion racking. Myth #1 : ‘Compatible components are unsafe.’ Since 1997 Universal has fulfilled over …

I’d like to clear up a few myths regarding the use of compatible components for Dexion racking.

Myth #1 : ‘Compatible components are unsafe.’
Since 1997 Universal has fulfilled over 10,000 orders for its ‘Dexion compatible’ components for repairs/extensions to Dexion Speedlock racking – without a single warranty or safety issue. This impeccable safety record is clear proof that our Compatible components are safe to use. Why else would the UK’s biggest PLC companies re-order time and time again…..!

Myth #2 :‘Compatibles are made from inferior steel’
Inferior to what? : to original Dexion or the new, so called ‘genuine’ Dexion?
Our components are made in the EU by a former licenced manufacturer. All raw materials used in the production of our products meet the design specfications which were set out by Dexion Ltd under the original licence agreement. All steel materials are traceable, verifiable and can be validated by metallurgic testing.

Myth #3 : ‘Dexion does not recommend using different manufacturers products in the same system.’
Clearly this does not apply to Universal since the products we supply were originally designed and licensed by Dexion and they share the same dimensions and technical performance.

However, we agree, it would be wrong to combine products which are designed differently and whose components have entirely different dimensions and techncal specification.
e.g Link 51 racking cannot be mixed with Dexion – they were never design to be interchanged.

Myth #4 : ‘If you mix different manufacturers products in the same system, Dexion will cancel its warranty’
Actually, Dexion Ltd went bankrupt in 2003 and no longer exists and therefore there are no warranties on pre-2003 systems, which account for nearly all the structures we’re involved with.

Myth #5 : ‘Insurance Companies will not sanction the use of compatibles’
We have never come across any such problem. Where insurance companies are aware of the provenance of our compatible racking and our 100% perfect safety record, then we cannot see any issues.
We do know of instances where certain competitors have used this issue as a scaremongering tactic.

If you have any comments or questions regarding any of these myths – we’d like to hear from you.

Pets Choice Ltd have been manufacturing pet food for many years and during thus time the existing racking systems in their two main warehouses had endured heavy use and had sustained a large amount of damage from fork truck activity. Rather than continuously spending large amounts of money on patching and fixing damage, Pets Choice called in Universal to tender for the removal of the old racking and replacement with Second Hand racking. A third warehouse had also just be acquired to store packaging materials.
For the main warehouses, Universal confirmed that it would be more cost effective in the long term to strip out and scrap the damage racking and recommended the installation of good quality Used Link racking system to the same specification. For the new warehouse Universal recommended a Used Dexion racking system with a slightly longer Beam length to accommodate larger packaging materials.

Pets Choice chose Universal on a combination of price, lead time and makes of racking (Dexion and Link are the two best known makes and future parts are more readily available)

Jack Taylor, Pets Choice’s Operations Director said “We are delighted with the whole installation. Universal supplied good quality racking at a very good price and were able to schedule the work without unnecessary disruption to our operations. We will certainly be using them again for future work”

Portsmouth based Elmdene International, manufacturers of intruder and fire alarm ancillaries underwent a rationalization programme at the end of last year involving relocation of production and storage facilities to new premises. As part of this rationalization Elmdene International were looking to install a new pallet racking system and contacted us after having visited the Universal web site.

Elmdene International knew of the Dexion design and wanted to learn more about Universal’s “Dexion compatible” products. Once convinced that our EU manufactured ‘compatible’ products (although not branded Dexion) were equally fit for purpose and competitive they placed the contract with us.

A major consideration was Universal’s large stock holding and their ability to supply with short notice.

Elmdene International were delighted when Universal completed the installation without a hitch in a matter of weeks, enabling them to relocate all their storage facility on time and to begin production at the new premises.

Elmdene International said “Universal supplied a new “Dexion compatible” system at a competitive price and completed the whole installation in the short time allowed without any problems. We are very pleased with the professional way in which Universal undertook the contract.
