Attention all Dexion Racking users

If your Dexion racking system has sustained damage and you need to buy replacement parts you may not be aware of an alternative choice you have in obtaining these.

Repairing and maintaining racking systems is much like repairing a steel bridge or any structure where load safety is important. If it gets damaged or some of the parts require replacement, its not necessary to go back to the original steel maker to get the part. (Indeed over the space of 10 to 20 years, the original supplier may no longer be in business).

Instead, the same parts can usually be sourced from other competent fabricators, so long as these new parts are compatible with the original part in terms of steel specification and engineering precision. In theory, anyone can make compatible components for Dexion racking, but in practice there is only one fabricator which has the expertise and manufacturing equipment to produce components to the same specification, at a competitive price and which are fully compatible and interchangeable with the original Dexion product.

Since all patents and design rights for the Dexion Speedlock product have long since expired, customers are free to source components from alternative sources such as Universal – in addition to the Dexion branded product currently offered by the Norwegian firm Constructor.

Since 1997, Universal Storage Equipment has fulfilled over 10,000 orders for compatible replacement parts. Thousands of leading UK companies including most of the UK PLC companies such as ASDA, Morrisons, Marks & Spencers etc , now use Universal’s compatible parts to repair Dexion racking.
These millions of parts are routinely inspected by Safety Auditors at sites throughout the UK and are passed without a single issue regarding compatibility or safety.

If you wish you know more about Universal’s compatible products or have been given conflicting advice about the suitability of using our components, we’d like to hear from you…..

.

What is Widespan shelving – is it the same as Longspan shelving?
Widespan (aka Longspan) is a hand loaded steel shelving system where the shelf size (left to right width) is normallybetween 1200mm and 2700mm. Normal frame height is between 2000 – 3000mm and the shelf medium is usually chipboard or steel panels.

So why is Widespan so popular?
I believe this is because its such a versatile shelving system. Todays widespan systems uses fully adjustable shelf beams (clip-on design with no nuts & bolts) so shelf levels can be change within minutes. It comes in a wide range of shelf sizes and frame heights and because each shelf can carry higher weight loads over a greater span, the system uses less components and therefore costs less per sq.metre of shelf space

Widespan can be used to store anything from small cartons to large boxes or components ….in fact anything a person can lift.
Its ideal for wholesalers, cash & carries, factories, archive file storage, clothes & garment traders….etc etc

If you have a particular storage requirement or you have a comment or suggestion you’d like to share with our readers, please reply to this blog.

ABC Logistics is a well known warehousing and distribution company which operates a network of Regional depots throughout England and Scotland . In order to maximise storage capacity at their main depot near Cambridge, they asked Universal to design and tender for the supply and installation of a 1000+ pallet position high density Drive-In racking system. To meet this requirement Universal was able to offer a large Used Redirack Drive-in racking system to the exact dimensions and specification required. Apart from the overall price, the three main deciding factors for awarding the contract to Universal were
A) Universals ability to complete the whole installation prior to Christmas 2009 (ie within 4 weeks )
B) the Redirack design, which is able to accommodate the European CP1 pallet
C) Universal ability to design the racks to extremely tight tolerances (millimetres) to maximise space usage.
John Williams, Operations Director for ABC says “Although not the cheapest option, Universal were able to convince us that the Redirack design was better suited to our requirements. They also had materials readily available and offered to complete the whole installation within our timescale. We are delighted with Universals performance – they supplied high quality materials to the agreed specification and the whole contract was completed on time with no hiccups whatsoever. “

Supermarket chains supply their Stores from a network of large RDCs’ (Regional Distribution Centres) where goods are stored on huge Pallet racking systems, many of them Dexion or Link systems.

Why a well known Supermarket chains chose Universal’s over other Traders and even manufacturers direct.

Supermarket chains supply their Stores from a network of large RDCs’ (Regional Distribution Centres) where goods are stored on huge Pallet racking systems, many of them Dexion or Link systems. Normally, when these sites require spare parts to repair or add to the racking, they contact the ‘preferred supplier’ appointed by Head Office – usually a Trader who supplies and installs a variety of racking makes.
On this occasion, being a Dexion user, this RDC decided to ask Universal to quote for 100 Upright posts. Although some 25% cheaper than their ‘preferred supplier’ it was not until we explained the following, that they decided to place the order with us:-

Our compatible parts are equivalent to Dexion, being manufactured in EU by a former Dexion License holder.

We have supplied over 10000 orders since 1997 – many to the Retail and Supermarket trades.

Our components are approved by Rack Safety Inspectors and have a 100% perfect safety record

Universals parts are already installed in this particular RDC and several others in the Group.

This RDC are delighted with our prices, products and delivery service.
Since then this RDC has ordered spare parts for the Link racking system installed in another of their warehouses.

Pets Choice Ltd have been manufacturing pet food for many years and during thus time the existing racking systems in their two main warehouses had endured heavy use and had sustained a large amount of damage from fork truck activity. Rather than continuously spending large amounts of money on patching and fixing damage, Pets Choice called in Universal to tender for the removal of the old racking and replacement with Second Hand racking. A third warehouse had also just be acquired to store packaging materials.
For the main warehouses, Universal confirmed that it would be more cost effective in the long term to strip out and scrap the damage racking and recommended the installation of good quality Used Link racking system to the same specification. For the new warehouse Universal recommended a Used Dexion racking system with a slightly longer Beam length to accommodate larger packaging materials.

Pets Choice chose Universal on a combination of price, lead time and makes of racking (Dexion and Link are the two best known makes and future parts are more readily available)

Jack Taylor, Pets Choice’s Operations Director said “We are delighted with the whole installation. Universal supplied good quality racking at a very good price and were able to schedule the work without unnecessary disruption to our operations. We will certainly be using them again for future work”

Portsmouth based Elmdene International, manufacturers of intruder and fire alarm ancillaries underwent a rationalization programme at the end of last year involving relocation of production and storage facilities to new premises. As part of this rationalization Elmdene International were looking to install a new pallet racking system and contacted us after having visited the Universal web site.

Elmdene International knew of the Dexion design and wanted to learn more about Universal’s “Dexion compatible” products. Once convinced that our EU manufactured ‘compatible’ products (although not branded Dexion) were equally fit for purpose and competitive they placed the contract with us.

A major consideration was Universal’s large stock holding and their ability to supply with short notice.

Elmdene International were delighted when Universal completed the installation without a hitch in a matter of weeks, enabling them to relocate all their storage facility on time and to begin production at the new premises.

Elmdene International said “Universal supplied a new “Dexion compatible” system at a competitive price and completed the whole installation in the short time allowed without any problems. We are very pleased with the professional way in which Universal undertook the contract.
